Housing for Migrant Workers in the Green Metropolitan Region
10 December 2021

Good housing for labor migrants is of great economic importance. Due to a shrinking labor market, labor migrants make a significant contribution to various sectors. Providing good housing is an important prerequisite and a social challenge.

Eighteen municipalities in the Green Metropolitan Region Arnhem-Nijmegen have decided to jointly develop a regional policy plan for housing labor migrants. Various experts are involved in drafting the policy plan, including employers, employment agencies, and housing providers such as HomeFlex. Willem Weggeman represented HomeFlex on December 9 at a digital panel meeting that focused on developing this policy plan.

Topics discussed during the session included the quality of housing, as well as the urgency with which action must be taken to realize housing. The housing must at least meet the standards of SNF (Foundation for Flexible Housing Standards), but more importantly, it is crucial to follow the recommendations of the Roemer Report. Another important component is the registration of labor migrants. This requires coordination with the municipality. With the expertise of the participants and the many topics discussed, the Green Metropolitan Region has gained a good understanding to further develop the policy plan.
